The
old year will soon pass and the New Year (a new decade, a new century and a
new millenium) is just on the horizon, waiting to descend upon us. As people
often say, “Say ‘bye-bye’ to the old as we bid it bon voyage and say ‘hello’
to the beckoning new year.” It
was 4:00 p.m. and I was walking on the street, a street filled with the air
of living. There were few people around and the leaves on the street sounded “sha,
sha” as they swirled in the cold wind. I did not maudlin this time as I did
the first when I saw these golden leaves all over the road. I
just looked at them with a smile, enjoying their beauty, listening to the
jumping in their hearts, although deep down I knew they were dying. That’s
the way they show their love to the world, I think. So, let’s be freer. It’s
going to be and so let it be –no moaning, no regretting – just rejoicing in
it. Then I found it to be true – it’s bare, it’s cold and it’s colourless,
but it is beautiful. It’s a good time for us to calm our hearts and to
recollect deeply, to correct our past faults and to prepare ourselves for the
coming new year. So,
thanks be to God for spring, summer, autumn and winter; for growing and
falling; for joy or sadness; for birth and death – all these are given by
Thee – natural and according to the order of the day. Without the pangs of
pregnancy in the earth in winter, you will not find the joy of birth in
spring, the blossoming in summer and the ripening in autumn. You may ask, “What’s
the meaning of repeating this year after year?” I can
only tell you now that with the repetition and the changing, you will be
renewed and you will be recycled from death. So, just be appreciative and enjoy all these around you. |
